Chapter 10

It was good to be out of the temple, and not just because it meant we were one step closer to finding the Nariu and returning him to the caverns where he belonged. It was better that I didn't stay inside so I didn't start thinking that there was a chance Horakhty was actually all right and not the annoying god I thought he was.

I pushed the thought aside. Right now, I needed to focus all of my attention on catching the Nariu. Though it felt wrong to be thinking about it that way considering he was a god in his own right. Maybe. I didn't know that for sure, perhaps the Nariu were just demi-gods of some kind, though that wouldn't explain how they'd come to being within the afterlife.

"Look," Horakhty said, pointing between the trees.

Surprise flooded through me as I recognised the figure sitting by the lake, his whiskers tasting the air. He looked calm, and not like he was worried about being caught in the Land of the Living. It made me wonder if he'd just been curious about what was on the other side of the veil.

Or if he didn't even realise he'd stepped over it.

"We can't set a trap in the lake while he's there," I pointed out.

"Mmm, true."

"I should change forms then switch back once I'm over the lake," I suggested.

"And what good is that going to do?" Horakhty asked, his hot breath fanning against my skin thanks to how close we were together. Though I knew there wasn't any way around that if we didn't want the Nariu to realise we were here.

"He was easily spooked when we were in the cave with him," I pointed out. "So it stands to reason that he'll be easily spooked here. If I fall into the lake and make a loud splash, in theory he should run away from the lake."

"And you're hoping he runs straight towards me."

I nodded. "We have the net we were going to use anyway. We can't put it in the lake, but if we hang it between two of the trees, it might work."

"Hmm."

"What? You don't want to do it just because it's my plan?"

"I didn't say that," he responded. "I was just thinking that there are a lot of different directions for him to run in. What if we hung it between the trees and then both of us tried to steer him towards it."

"All right, that sounds better," I mumbled, hating that he was right but very much seeing his point. If the Nariu disappeared into the oasis, it was going to take us even more time to find him, and with each passing hour, it was getting more and more likely that I was going to miss going to my tree this evening. And knowing my luck, today would be the day that a soul came and I needed to tend to them.

"I'm surprised you agreed."

"I want this to be over with," I responded. "Then we can both go back to living lives that don't involve spending so much time with one another.
